Actually I had Greek salad, cole slaw, and baby back ribs followed by chocolate mousse for breakfast; in reality it was more like lunch than breakfast (I have never enjoyed eating in the morning). Whenever Karl and Lily, our dear friends from the scrumptious Swiss House restaurant, come for a holiday, Karl always arrives bearing the most delectable dishes; and of course the only polite thing to do is stuff oneself . . . for two or three days.
This year’s 4th of July turned out to be a simple and fun one. During the morning we all bustled around tidying and shuffling the deck furniture into the shade so we would not broil while dining. Once Karl and Lily arrived the real bustling began, dad and the girls darted back and forth between the kitchen and the chef tending the grill, while mom and I pulled out her Nigella Lawson inspired Greek Salad and fresh fruits and berries. When everything was done, we loaded our plates and feasted like kings. With the main course consumed, I finished off the meal with a scoop of mom’s chocolate & chocolate chip ice cream, a generous helping of Karl’s chocolate mousse topped off with a chocolate meringue; I am still alive so my chocolate tolerance must be higher that I originally thought.
Feeling akin to the fatted calf, the rest of the afternoon involved a lot of sitting and digesting. When Karl and Lilly left around what would normally have been dinner time, we changed the living room into theatre mode and watched “A Goofy Movie;” amazingly I managed several snacks during the course of the film. That night dad and the girls went to watch the local fireworks display, mom and I could hear the distant booms as we sat on the deck. Fireworks are one of my very favorite things, but this year I felt contented staying home; besides, there was more chocolate mousse to nibble on. :)
Sounds very filing indeed! Physically and intellectually. We did not go to the fair fireworks (we did hear they weren't worth the trouble)... we were at the capitol fireworks in Washington DC. Well, via satellite but still... ;)
